What frequencies can humans hear?

Healthy young adults typically hear from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The upper limit drops with age and noise exposure — many adults over 30 can't hear above 15–17 kHz. This test lets you find your own range.

Is this safe for my ears and headphones?

Yes, if used responsibly. Start with the low volume setting, especially with headphones, and never play loud tones for extended periods. Skip the very high frequencies if they cause discomfort.

Why do I hear some frequencies louder than others?

Both human hearing and speaker response are non-linear. Small speakers and most earbuds roll off below 100 Hz and above 15 kHz. That's expected. If one frequency is completely silent, it may indicate a driver failure or hearing issue.

Why can't I hear the 20 kHz tone?

Most adults lose high-frequency hearing naturally. Your device's sample rate may also cap the playable range — if it reports less than 44,100 Hz, frequencies above ~20 kHz cannot be reproduced.
